Vegas View Community Food Bank has been partnering with Three Square since 2008. However, their story began more than 40 years ago when Pastor Jerald Mason’s mother, Lulu, and a team of volunteers were serving 50 meals weekly. That number has since tripled to 150 meals.
More than 1,500 people receive food through their pantry every month. For older adults who may have a difficult time accessing food assistance, Pastor Mason’s team makes home deliveries to senior housing facilities. “Our vision is serving those who come through [Vegas View],” explains Mason. “We are going to endeavor to take the food we get from Three Square and deliver it to those who don’t have the capacity to receive the goods.”
Services and programs including TEFAP, Bible Study, and counseling are also offered. In addition, they operate a computer lab and offer Wi-Fi services, which were helpful for children who were attending classes online during the 2020 lockdown. During the summer months, they host “Christmas in the Summer,” where items like furniture and electronics are given to those in need.
Faith is a guiding light in Vegas View’s journey. “There’s a scripture in The Bible where Jesus says to his disciples: ‘I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was naked, and you didn’t clothe me.’ It is our mission and it is in our hearts to meet the needs of those who seek help from us,” explains Mason. “Our mission involves helping them [community members] in ways, both spiritually and naturally.”
Vegas View hosts a drive-thru distribution every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at 1906 Glider St. For more information about their distributions and services, please call 702-642-6211.
