Tim was born and raised in Las Vegas and has lived here his entire life. As a seventeen-year-old senior at Coronado High School, Tim is busy with classes, participating in extracurricular activities, and completing college applications. This past summer, he chose to spend his break interning with Three Square to learn more about the business side of the food bank, all while giving back to the community.
How did you first hear about Three Square?
I first heard about Three Square from my mom, who visited the food bank a couple of times.
Did your internship with Three Square meet your expectations?
Yes, it did. I worked together with Mikell Goheen of the volunteer team. She did a great job connecting me to different departments where I was able to work with each department at Three Square. I had an idea of what I wanted to experience, but I experienced more than what I had imagined.
What did you learn from your experience interning at Three Square?
Not only did I learn about business strategies, but I also learned to be professional and flexible with my schedule.
On a deeper level, I was humbled by my experience. The mobile route for me was the most life-changing. It's really impactful to a person to see how handing out food to children affects them. Looking at the communities and hearing some of the stories of what happens there, you really don't understand what the children go through until you're actually walking in their shoes; being there with them was when I got the closest to that.
After completing your internship with Three Square, do you see yourself working in the non-profit sector someday?
Working in nonprofit didn't cross my mind. But the more I worked at Three Square, I realized that it's an environment that anyone would want to be a part of. Everyone has one goal in mind: ending hunger. Even though each person is performing their respective role, they are working together. There's a spirit about Three Square, an attitude, an emotion about the workplace; it's how I would like to work.
Anything else you'd like to add about your internship with Three Square?
I wouldn't want to spend my summer any other way. It's really a unique opportunity and I learned so much. If you have dreams, go for it. You never know when opportunities will arise.
