I had never seen the depths of hunger prior to joining Three Square Food Bank almost a decade ago. That’s when I learned that hunger exists in every zip code across the Las Vegas Valley.
When the pandemic hit, Three Square shifted its business model and began distributing food directly to the public for the first time. I remember volunteering at one of our drive-thru distribution sites, and it shocked me to see the line of cars that stretched for miles. Many of the people in those vehicles waited in line overnight just to make sure they would receive food when we opened at 8:00 a.m.
September is Hunger Action Month, a national initiative by Feeding America that presents the opportunity for people and companies to get involved in the fight against hunger by supporting food banks through their own means. What I love most about this initiative is that it’s recognized across the country. Every Feeding America food bank rallies their supporters to bring attention to the hunger problem facing their communities. Three Square’s supporters never cease to inspire the work that I do here. Engaging and building relationships with individuals and companies that genuinely care about uplifting the community helps me maintain my focus on the big picture: ending hunger.
This month, I encourage you to think about what you can do for our neighbors – the hardworking families struggling to put food on the table; the seniors who have to choose between refilling their prescription or buying groceries; and the children who can’t focus on their schoolwork because they don’t have enough to eat at home. It doesn’t take much to make a difference. Consider volunteering, starting a virtual food drive, spreading the word about hunger, or making a donation.
