While driving eastbound on Sahara Avenue, passing Decatur Boulevard, then Arville Street and Valley View Boulevard, I see countless cars lined up, waiting to receive food at the Palace Station parking lot, one of our larger emergency food distribution sites. Although we do not start distributing for another three hours, families have been waiting inside their vehicles since 5 a.m.

In a world where threats and disasters are always possible, there's a team that is always ready to respond to times of need, the "Rescue Heroes.” This is the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) tagline for the long-running show Rescue Heroes, where a team of quick responding heroes help save communities from natural disasters. Much like the show, we have Rescue Heroes who dedicate their time, energy and resources to help those in need. These men and women spend their days going to retail donors, rescuing product that is destined for the landfill and converting it to food to aid in our fight against hunger.

At the beginning of each new year, my husband David and I like to reflect on joys from the previous year and hopes for the coming year. We are so lucky, of course, that sustenance is not on either list. For too many people in our community, basic needs like having enough food are pressing hopes.

If you have ever visited Three Square, you may have noticed a Margaret Mead quote above our Demonstration Kitchen: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." It is a reminder for us at Three Square that we simply cannot do what we do without collaboration from our community partners. Fortunately, we operate in a city that is home to generous individuals, families and corporations who relate to our mission and recognize that they too can join us in the fight to end hunger.

On May 23, 2019, Senate Bill 178 (SB 178) was signed by the Governor of Nevada, Steve Sisolak. SB 178 enjoyed a very successful run during the 80th Legislative Session. In fact, the bill received unanimous support from both sides of the political aisle as evident in the Assembly and Senate final votes/passage.
